Do you always need to appoint a Quantity Surveyor?

In a construction project, a Quantity Surveyor (QS) is responsible for managing all aspects of the project’s finances, including cost planning, cost estimating, value management, contract administration, and final accounts. The role of a QS is to ensure that the project is delivered on time, within budget, and to the required quality.

While it is not always necessary to appoint a Quantity Surveyor in a relatively small and straight-forward construction project, their role is considered essential in larger and more complex projects. A QS can help to mitigate the risk of cost overruns, delays, and disputes by providing accurate and timely cost information, managing the procurement process, and ensuring that the project is delivered in accordance with the contract.

In some cases, the client or owner may choose not to appoint a QS if the project is relatively small or straightforward, or if the client has in-house expertise to manage the project’s finances. In other cases, the client may choose to appoint a QS on a consultancy basis, rather than as a full-time employee, to provide specific services such as cost estimating or contract administration.
