What is a subconsultant?

A subconsultant is a professional who is appointed and paid by another discipline (usually an architectural practice) to carry out design or surveys work that requires specialism.

Some examples of subconsultants include:

  • Landscape Architects
  • Ecologists
  • Arboriculturalists.

Landscape Architects can be appointed both as consultants or as subconsultants. The diagrams below provide a couple of the alternatives depending on who they are appointed to:
